How to Hire AI Engineers in Malaysia in 2026: Salary, Skills and Strategy
Short answer: AI engineer and data scientist postings in Malaysia advertise a median of RM9,200 a month, with the middle half between RM6,000 and RM11,500 (27 postings with a stated salary, August 2026). That is RM2,700, or about 40%, above the median for backend developers. In 118 AI job descriptions we read, Python (86%) and machine learning (81%) were near-universal, and 62% asked for LLM or generative AI experience. This guide covers what to budget, which skills to ask for, and how to set up the hire.
We are a Malaysian IT recruitment agency, so we have a stake in one of the hiring options below. The salary and skills figures come from public job postings that we collected and counted, not from our fees or placements.
Which AI role are you hiring for?
Job titles in this area overlap, and many postings ask one person to cover several jobs. Decide which of these you need first:
- Data scientist: analyses data, builds statistical and machine learning models, and turns the results into business decisions.
- Machine learning engineer: takes models into production. Writes the code that trains, serves and monitors them.
- AI engineer (LLM applications): builds products on top of large language models, such as assistants, search and document tools, often using retrieval (RAG) rather than training models from scratch.
- MLOps engineer: builds the infrastructure that keeps models versioned, deployed and retrained reliably.
If you need one person who can analyse data, train models, build the LLM product and run the infrastructure, you are asking for a rare combination. Splitting the work, or starting with the role closest to your first product, widens the pool.
AI engineer salary in Malaysia
From 1,226 Malaysian tech postings with a stated monthly salary (August 2026). All figures are RM a month, and the range is the middle half of postings.
| Role (postings) | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Data science / AI (27) | 9,200 | 6,000 to 11,500 |
| Data engineer (36) | 8,500 | 7,100 to 10,500 |
| DevOps / cloud (28) | 9,300 | 7,000 to 11,000 |
| Backend (140) | 6,500 | 5,500 to 8,200 |
| Data analyst (37) | 4,200 | 3,800 to 6,000 |
By level, mid-level data science and AI postings have a median of RM8,500 (21 postings). Few senior AI postings state a salary: the 3 we found had a median of RM12,500, the 2 junior postings had a median of RM5,000, and the remaining posting was a manager role at RM14,000. Treat these small samples as indicative only. Postings titled machine learning engineer were too few to report on their own (4 postings, median RM9,800).
These are advertised salaries. Candidates who match every requirement often ask for more, so budget towards the upper half of the range if the role is hard to fill. For the full breakdown, see our data scientist and AI engineer salary guide.
Skills Malaysian employers ask for in AI roles
We found 141 AI job postings (data science, AI and machine learning titles) in Malaysia between May and July 2026, 4.3% of all tech postings. The table below counts skills in the 118 of them with a full job description.
| Skill | Postings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Python | 101 | 86% |
| Machine learning | 95 | 81% |
| LLMs / generative AI | 73 | 62% |
| Azure | 52 | 44% |
| AWS | 51 | 43% |
| SQL | 45 | 38% |
| RAG | 40 | 34% |
| Google Cloud | 38 | 32% |
| MLOps | 34 | 29% |
| Docker | 32 | 27% |
| Kubernetes | 29 | 25% |
| PyTorch | 27 | 23% |
| LangChain | 26 | 22% |
| TensorFlow | 25 | 21% |
| Vector databases | 25 | 21% |
| NLP | 25 | 21% |
Three things stand out:
- LLM work is now the norm in AI roles. 62% of AI postings mention LLMs or generative AI, and about a third mention RAG. Across all 2,386 tech postings with a full description, not only AI roles, 10% mention LLMs.
- Framework requirements are spread out. PyTorch (23%), TensorFlow (21%) and LangChain (22%) each appear in only about one posting in five. A job description that requires all of them asks for a combination that few employers ask for.
- Cloud is split between Azure and AWS. They appear in almost the same share of AI postings (44% and 43%). Say which one you run.
Other skills: scikit-learn (19%), deep learning (17%), Spark (13%), Hugging Face (8%) and computer vision (8%).
Where the AI roles are
104 of the 141 AI postings (74%) were in Kuala Lumpur, and 27 more were in Petaling Jaya or elsewhere in Selangor. Only 2 were in Penang. By job title, 37 postings (26%) were senior, lead or manager roles and 6 (4%) were junior. The rest did not state a level.
How to hire AI engineers in Malaysia
- Write down the problem before the title. Describe what the person will build in the first six months: a forecasting model, an internal LLM assistant, a production pipeline. The role (data scientist, ML engineer, AI engineer or MLOps) follows from that.
- Set the salary range before you post. Use the medians above as a starting point and agree internally how far you can go, so you can respond quickly if a candidate has another offer.
- Keep the must-have list short. Python, machine learning and, for LLM products, retrieval experience cover most postings. Treat specific frameworks as a plus unless your stack depends on them.
- Test the real work. Ask candidates to walk through a model or LLM feature they took to production: what broke, how they measured it and what they changed. This shows more than a generic coding puzzle.
- Keep the process short. Plan the interview stages and decision makers before the first interview so you can make an offer without long gaps.
- Choose how to engage. Full-time employment suits a long-term AI team. A contract can work for a defined project, such as a proof of concept. Companies without a Malaysian entity can use an Employer of Record (EOR). Our guide to full-time, contract or EOR compares the total monthly cost of each.
Where to find AI talent
- Job posts reach people who are actively looking. Put the problem, the stack and the salary range in the post.
- Referrals from your own engineers can reach people who are not looking for a job.
- Universities and practitioner communities can help with junior and graduate hires.
- A specialist recruitment agency can approach people who are not applying for jobs. You pay a fee, so it makes most sense for senior or hard-to-fill roles.

How we counted
- Salaries: 1,226 Malaysian tech postings with a stated monthly salary (August 2026), the same data used in our salary guides.
- Skills, locations and levels: 141 data science, AI and machine learning postings among 3,256 tech job postings that Seekers collected from major Malaysian job sites between 1 May and 20 July 2026, with duplicates across sites counted once. A skill counts when it appears at least once in a full job description (118 postings).
- Limits: job postings show what employers ask for, not who they hire or what they finally pay.
